This position plays a critical role in the response to standard Request for Proposals (RFPs) in the Key Account space within UnitedHealthcare’s National Proposal Services (NPS) team.  Accountabilities include coordinating and writing proposals to achieve key business objectives and project managing the gathering of supporting documents and analyses.  This position is an integrated blend of writing and project management.  A critical component of this position is the ability to work within a fast-paced, deadline driven, and complex environment.  Healthcare background, strong interpersonal skills along with business to business writing and experience working with sales, underwriting and other functions are essential. 
 
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Strong writing, ability to convey complex thoughts, both written and oral in a clear, concise way and turn complex information into persuasive content
  • Ability to work through complex issues with internal and external partners to deliver on all aspects of the proposal with high sales satisfaction levels
  • Responsible for strategic writing, project management, actively coordinating and participating in meetings regarding development of proposal strategy to identify customer specific issues and nonstandard escalations
  • Ability to multi-task and coordinate overall proposal activities, including drafting new proposals in well-written question/answer format, gather related information and direct the preparation of supporting documents and analyses such as network requests for GeoAccess reports, disruption reports, provider counts and claim repricing.  Collaborate with underwriting to complete financial information
  • Understand and incorporate sales strategy, value propositions, and messaging concepts and convey that through proposal responses
  • Handle processing of all non-standard plan provisions and benefit design requests by submitting to BAR.  Create benefit summaries or deviations documents outlining proposed benefits and positioning any deviations in a favorable manner
  • Thoroughly understands and utilize all available sales support tools, including the database, marketing collaterals, Network Match reports, ATLAS/PRF, etc.
  • Work in a self-directed manner with sensitivity to tight deadlines and to working in a collaborative group environment.  Complete work as assigned accurately and within specified deadlines
  • Coordinate with sister companies and business units to reflect one core value story and integrated process
  • Conduct peer to peer quality review prior to shipment and thoroughly review proposal product before shipment, insure final questionnaire accuracy and overall proposal quality
  • Maintain and enhance business skills, including understanding health care industry, consultant / marketplace trends and healthcare reform.  Participate in all relevant training opportunities to enhance and improve current skill set
  • Serve as a mentor and coach to entry-level proposal writers on the NPS team by completing case reviews (pre-quality) and providing developmental feedback

Required Qualifications:

  • 2+ years in the healthcare industry in a proposal writing, marketing or customer service role. 
  • RFP, presale, implementation, sales or account management experience preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
  • Solid computer skills, especially in Microsoft  Word, Excel, PowerPoint and online proposal formats
  • Knowledge of Qvidian database software is preferred, but not required

  • Proven written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills

  • Strong project management skills

  • Intense customer focus and ability to adapt style and approach to customer preferences

  • Strong focus on quality  

  • Self-starter and ability to work independently

  • Flexible and able to cope with changing conditions
